Since approximately September 2007, a uranium company, New Horizons Nevada, has begun staking claims in
Park County in order to extract uranium from under ground. This company has currently staked out land near
Elkhorn Road, which is about 15 miles east of Thousand Peaks Ranch, as the crow flies. The company is
intending to use in situ mining. In situ mining is a process in which wells are drilled through our aquifers and a
chemical solution is pumped into the uranium deposit. The uranium is then pumped out to the surface. The
problem, obviously, is that if there are any problems or accidents involved with the process, then the
groundwater can become polluted with uranium, and therefore unusable. Can you say RADIOACTIVE? Even
though this operation is not located in Thousand Peaks, there is a huge aquifer that extends from Kenosha
Pass to the Eleven Mile Reservoir and from the Taryall Mountain Range to the Buffalo Peaks, by Trout Creek
Pass. This, obviously, includes Thousand Peaks.
Even if the operation proceeds without incident, uranium mining in the area is likely to hurt property values. In
addition, there is a great deal of BLM land included in the Thousand Peaks area, where mining claims can
potentially be filed. It can happen here.
There is a local citizens' group that is trying to prevent all uranium mining in the area. It is called SOSPWO8 for
Save Our South Park Water 2008. Please look at the website at www.freewebs.com/sospw08/home.htm for
more information.
Please contact the Park County Commissioners, and Colorado State Representatives and State Senators and
voice your opposition to the uranium mining. If you can volunteer you time, skills, or money, please contact
